Maria Longworth Nichols Storer was an artist specializing in using beautiful glazes to decorate plain pottery, commonly with an oriental style. She started the company "Rookwood Pottery" in Cincinnati as a way to market this passion. She became well known in this niche, perfecting glaze and kiln temperature conditions to make very ornately decorated pottery. The pot above is a perfect example of all these qualities. It is elaborate, with an oriental feel from the gold designs and an intricate painted scene with birds flying on a scenic background.

This week I chose to blog about this particular piece.  It appears it was created using the wheel method and the artist cut different variations to create the design.  This may be my favorite piece I have seen yet.  I think the intrinsic design is unbelievable.  I like how this work of art has a rustic feel to it.  It almost appears as it was created with deer antlers.  I feel that it appears different than the pieces we are normally see and that is what draws my attention to it.

Coil Pots

      Humans have been constructing ceramic pottery for over 10,000 years. There are various techniques to create pottery. Coil pots became prevalent in areas where agriculture was expanding. The coils are rolled out of clay, scored, slip is added and they are pinched together. The pots would store grains, crops and seeds for the next planting. These pieces can be   distinctively different from one another due to the artist’s creativity.

Robert Arneson was definitely a very unique artist than most who wasn't afraid to expose the vulgarity and honesty of reality. In this sculpture, he voices his political views of being a "vehicle" for anger and pain. He once said, " I want to make high art that is funny, outrageous and also reveals the human condition, which is not always high.”
