Elizabeth Blackwell was the first woman to receive a medical degree is the United States. She paved the way for future woman doctors to be successful in the field of medicine. She founded the NY infirmary for woman and children and the national health society. Her place setting is a metaphor for her triumphs and difficulties in the field  of medicine. The E on her runner is actually a stethoscope symbolizing her as a the first woman medical doctor.
