Isabella d’Este - “The First Lady of the Renaissance”

The plate above is a part of the exhibit "The Dinner Party" created by the artist Judy Chicago. This plate was one of many that each represent and honor different woman through the ages. According to the Brooklyn Museum, the designs on all the plates were based on butterfly and vulvar central motifs. The plate above is in honor of Isabella d'Este, who was born in 1474 and died in 1539. Known as "The First Lady of the Renaissance," Isabella was an Italian who was born into the ruling family in Farrara, Italy. She was very well-educated, a diplomat who secured the release of her husband, a humanitarian, a patron of the arts, and the beloved ruler of Mantua. The plate dedicated to her utilized the style of Urbino majolica ceramicware, which was created in factories supported by Isabella, as well as the Renaissance artistic style which favored perspective, vanishing points, and horizontal lines.
