Maria Longworth Rookwood Pottery

Image
In 1880, Maria Longworth founded Rookwood Pottery. Rookwood Pottery is the painting of blank tableware. The piece above is an example of Rookwood Pottery. I really find this piece interesting, as I feel it gives off a certain mood or feeling. I like how the piece makes it appear as if the mushrooms are somewhere foggy, especially due to the fact that the two mushrooms behind the one in the front are more faint in color. I also like how darker color was used near the bottom and lighter colors at the top, giving the imagery of ground and sky. Overall I find the colors used and the detail on the three mushrooms very interesting.

I picked this piece by Maria because the design really caught my eye. This doesn't look like n ordinary everyday vase this looks like something expensive something you wouldn't find anywhere maybe at like a rich house. Also the shape is very pretty because it starts off big and then it gets smaller. The flowers actually look kind of 3D they look like they actually pop out of the vase almost like if you can touch them.

This is a thrown vase by the artist Maria Longworth Nichols. I love this piece because of the rimed detail at the top and the flowers over the entire vase. The white peddle adds a pop of color that is pleasing to the eye. The shades of blue reminds me of the waves of the ocean and proves a calming effect as well as the texture detail in the boarder at the top of the vase. I really enjoy this piece by Maria Longworth Nichols.

Maria Longworth Nichols Storer was an artist specializing in using beautiful glazes to decorate plain pottery, commonly with an oriental style. She started the company "Rookwood Pottery" in Cincinnati as a way to market this passion. She became well known in this niche, perfecting glaze and kiln temperature conditions to make very ornately decorated pottery. The pot above is a perfect example of all these qualities. It is elaborate, with an oriental feel from the gold designs and an intricate painted scene with birds flying on a scenic background.

Maria Longworth Nichols  founded Rookwood Pottery in Cincinnati, Ohio. I n 1900 she won a gold medal at the Universelle Exposition for her paintings on bronze medium.  This ceramic plate is beautiful, the medium used for it is p aint and glazed earthenware. This is a very unique piece and I love how  Maria Longworth Nichols made the fish the focal point.

This is a Maria Longworth Nichols Storer piece. I like this because I love the small details in the pot such as the little white flowers and the way the color changes from green to purple. I also love how the gold trim around the pot and on the top of the pot. I also like the texture in the gold parts. I also think the top portion of this pot is interesting where it looks like part of it is chipped. I think this adds authenticity to the pot and gives it a vintage look. Maria Longworth Nichols Storer was the founder of Rookwood pottery in Cincinnati, Ohio. Her work is considered to be some of the earliest examples of pottery in the United States.

I chose this piece by Maria Longworth Nichols because of its timeless elegance.  I appreciate not only the shape but also the opening at the top for how crafty it is.  In addition, I think that the glaze on the outside adds to the elegance.  It looks very shiny and sleek and definitely grabs one's attention.

Maria Longworth Nichols Storer was fascinated by japenese art and culture. Pushing the limits in ceramics she created beautiful design underneath the glaze, and even added a dragon coming off the body of the piece. The dragon is why this piece caught my eye because not many place something in 3D like this.

I chose this vase by Maria Longworth because its very ellagant. I love the contrast of the colors, and the silver brings out the vase details with the flowers. It looks like it was done on the wheel but im not sure how the flowers and the stem designs were done. I would totally have this vase in my house.

This vase made by Maria Longworth was very beautiful. The shiny, gold color really makes the piece stand out and the texture brings a rich feel to it. I believe this vase was wheel-thrown because of the smooth, practically perfect shape it has. My favorite part of the artwork would have to be the glazes and the picture painted. It ties together nature with materialism. Absolutely beautiful!!!!

I found this piece by Maria Longworth Nichols.  My favorite part of this piece is the texture that was used.  The grapes and the vines appear to pop out of the pot.  In addition, each grape leaf looks like it can be felt separately.  I also found it interesting how the body of the pot resembles tree bark with streaks going up and down.  Overall this is a very nice piece that contained very detailed texture.

This piece by Maria Longworth is very cool.  Maria was very creative by incorporating the netting around the pot which makes it appear as if the sea creatures are being caught by a fisherman.  I was immediately intrigued with this piece because it was different from any other ceramics work I have seen.  Maria's pots are all very creative!

!!!RookWood!!!  I like this artwork because the vases look verry unique with the silver designs around the dark pots!  the gloss look that they have gives the vase a very modern feel. the colors make the silver designs stand out so much. i enjoy looking at every single vase. every vase has its own style and even though they are very similar in some ways. i give these vases 5 thumbs up!

Aladdin Vase, 1882

Image
I really admire the 3-D design that Storer adds to this vase. The intricate details i.e. the gold accents and glossy glaze are also very beautiful. The dragon brings the vase to life and makes the art work truly unique. The dragon and catfish are common motifs in Japanese folklore. Storer was fascinated with Japanese art and culture. This vase is a prime example of her interest and desire to push beyond creative limits.

The Aladdin Vase; 1882 by Marina Longworth is a very interesting piece in my opinion. in the brief research about this piece, I learned that women during this time period were responsible for decor in the home. I love this Vase because it goes out of the "norm" of what is aesthetically pleasing to the eye. we look at hundreds of wheel thrown symmetrical vases of this style. she uses a personal touch of adding multi dimensional decoration to the outside of the vase and the effect is unbelievable. this seems to be a trademark of some of her works. Lastly I did see one piece she did that involved a copper vase. I'm interested to know how that was thrown during this time period.

Maria Longworth Nicols

Image
Looking at different pieces made by Maria Longworth Nicols, I came across many that I enjoyed. This vase was made in the early 1900s. I  found that her work differs from one another. This flower vase has a matte glaze finish to it that gives it a beautiful look. I like the use of dark colors on the vase because it allows the floral design to stand out. This is an overall beautiful piece and you can tell a lot of time went into creating it.

Maria Longworth Nichols - Aladdin Vase

Image
Aladdin Vase was designed and created by Maria Longworth Nichols.  It appears the wheel method was use to produce this piece of ceramic.  My favorite aspect is the attention to detail.  I like how the fish paintings appear to be swimming around the pot rather just a stationary design.

This pot by Maria Longworth is beautiful. It's unlike anything I've seen thus far and I appreciate her attention to detail on each of the fish. I also love the gold glitter net that goes across the side of this piece. The choice of creating a yellow background was perfect because it accentuates the vibrant colors of each fish. Overall, this is a really cool piece of artwork and I am interested in her style of ceramic making.
Image
She created an under-glaze and over-glaze kiln. i like this piece because of how the fish come out and have Japanese inspired theme. i also like how the bottom looks like its marble and how she changed the shades of green throughout the piece. you can also see how detailed the fish came out and i believe how the dragon wraps around the whole base.

This vase gives a creepy vibe. It looks like a evil monkey maybe hiding or teasing a bat. I really enjoy the colors and details in this vase. The colors give it a very natural spooky vibe. It has a unique metallic sheen. I detail in the vase is incredible and well done. I would definitely love this vase around Halloween.

Maria Longworth Nichols Storer

Image
This vase by Maria Longworth Nichols Storer really caught my eye because of the bright coloring and pattern. The design really stands out compared to many of the other ceramic designs I've chosen before. The article posted says the Maria hired many artists and chemists to help her create different colors for her vases. It can really be seen through this piece of art. I also really like how the vase has bright pieces of gold throughout it, and the texture that it has throughout the top portion of the vase.

Maria Longworth Nichols Storer was an American artist who lived in Cincinnati. She specialized in painting ceramics, commonly incorporating a Japanese style. She was born into a wealthy family in the 19th century, and created the company Rookwood. Their niche was high quality colorful glazes that were incorporated into pieces that were mass produced. The piece above is a beautiful example of her pottery. The brilliant greens, blues, and gold along with the delicate flowers gives this ceramics piece a wonderful beauty. The combination of simplicity with the intricacy of the colors themselves elevates this pot. Overall, a spectacular job.

Maria Longworth Nichols Storer

Maria Longworth Nichols Storer was the founder of Rookwood Pottery of Cincinnati, Ohio. She is a patron of fine arts. Most of the paintings on her vases were inspired by her love for Japanese art.  This piece is the Earthenware crushed vase made in 1882. The painting on this vase is what brought me to it. I love how the base tones are very earthly colors. The branches are painted so perfectly while everything else is more of a smudged paint effect. This vase is very reflective of her using Japanese art as her inspiration. Lastly I find it interesting how the top isn't flat. While everything else on the vase is perfect and smooth the top has four points. I couldn't find the reasoning behind this but I like it because it just reminds you this is a handmade piece.

Bernard Leach

Image
This is a piece of ceramics made by Bernard Leach. I really like the detail and colors of this piece.  Bernard Leach played a crucial pioneering role in creating an identity for artist potters across the world.

Bernard Leach post

I love the simplicity of this "fruit bowl" by Bernard Leach.  I appreciate how the outside is very simple and elegant and yet the inside displays a beautiful design.  I feel that the creation of this bowl was very thoughtful.  The design is very sleek.

Bernard Leach Vase

Image
This piece was made by Bernard Leach, who was a British studio potter and art teacher that is referred to as the "Father of British studio pottery". This piece stood out to me mainly due to the use of the color dark blue over a white background. This piece is simply detailed with straight lines and four fish. The design of all of the fish are the same and they almost look identical to one-another. I admire how this piece still stands out even with such a simple design.
Image
The image above shows one of Bernard Leach's many works. Leach's work is described to be simple and functional. However his work is still aesthetic, as one may consider the image above to be such. It appears that Leach's focus was the functionality of his work, but that does not mean his art was bland. I particularly like the black and copper tones of this cup with its somewhat reflective property. While Leach was born in Hong Kong, he was a British potter who is often referred to as the "Father of British studio pottery". Leach is not only famously regarded for his influence through his work, but also his literature. His book, A Potter's Book , remains relevant in the world of art today.

Tree Design Pot - Bernard Leach

Image
This piece of art was created and designed by Bernard Leach.  It appears this pot was created using the wheel technique.  My favorite aspect of it is the intrinsic design.  I like the simplicity of the colors used and how the background appears to be a sunset with the tree in the front as the main focus.

Bernard Leach

Image
Bernard Leach was regarded as the "Father of British Studio Pottery" because he was British but had a unique asian style he added to his work. Living in Japan for so long influenced his work and his worked influenced contemporary ceramic designs. This piece by him caught my eye because the fish design showed how much of his work was influenced from where he grew up for so long. It looks like he used a wheel to make this beautiful piece.

Bernard Leach

Image
I found this piece by British artist Bernard Leach.  I found the piece very interesting as the middle symbolizes a tree.  In addition, I like the combination of the colors he used.  While this piece looks like it was done on a wheel, it seems to have texture up and down.  Finally, the glazing he used was well done and highlights the colors of the piece.

Bernard Leach

Image
This is a piece by British potter Bernard Leach. He is known as the "Father of British Studio Pottery". Leach advocated for simple forms of pottery. His pots were ethical and promoted an aesthetic concern rather than functional. I chose this piece because it reminds me of a cookie jar and I can tell it was done on a wheel. I like the intricate artistic details on the pot and how the lid looks like it has different layers even though it is just a paint effect.

Bernard Leach Salt Glaze

Image
This piece was made by Bernard Leach and it is a Salt Glaze pot. This is a very unique pot and it caught my eye because you can see that a lot of work was put into creating this pot. The pot has a lot of detail and you can tell that it has a lot of texture as well when you touch it. This is the type of image you can look at and already be able to imagine how it will feel. I really like the handle and also the opening of it because it kind of reminds me of a water fall.

Bernard Leach

Image
This is footed slab bowl from artist Bernard Leach. I love how the the cut corners of each slab adds a dynamic wave to the piece. I enjoy how the foot of the bowl is a different color than the bowl itself, it really adds dimension. This piece can be a nice accent to any side table especially in the fall time with the dark colors. After looking at Bernard Leach's work, I really enjoy his style and is something I would purchase.

Salt glaze pot

Image
https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/1/10/Salt_glaze_jug.JPG/200px-Salt_glaze_jug.JPG This pottery piece by Bernard Leach is very unique to me because it encompasses an architectural design which truly makes this piece unlike any other. I admire the textured "rocky" handle on the pot and the pot's resemblance to a house. The overall design of the pot is very intricate. Salt glaze pottery dates back to the eighteenth century. The pottery has a " grayish white surface with a texture like an orange peel. Salt glaze was made by throwing salt into the kiln while the pottery was being fired."  https://www.kovels.com/price-guide/pottery-porcelain-price-guide/salt-glaze.html

Bernard Leach Two-handled Jar

Image
This Jar made by Bernard Leach caught my attention because of the unique incorporation of two handles. I also like this piece because of the beautiful transition of brown and beige colors. The rim of this piece seems to give an illusion of a melting candle, dripping down the jar. The carving in the middle gives it originality and demonstrates that it is a piece by Bernard Leach.

Bernard Leach Pottery

Image
This is a Bernard Leach ceramic piece. This marmalade jar was painted blue and has brown designs over a cream ground. The rim is thin and has a notch for a spoon which I thought was useful for its purpose.  I enjoy the contemporary design and the simple shape of the jar. The brush work of the glaze gives the piece a sophisticated look and feel to it, which I enjoyed.

Bernard Leach

Bernard Leach was a British studio potter and art teacher. He is regarded as the "Father of British studio pottery." The Leach Pottery was founded in 1920 by Bernard Leach and Shoji Hamada in St Ives, Cornwall, in the United Kingdom. Personally I love simplicity especially when it comes to pottery. This piece is simple yet elegant. The blue stands out nicely against the white. This piece isn't overwhelmed with design. Its one blue swipe is enough design to make this pot so beautiful.

Bernard

Image
This piece by Bernard Leach is filled with texture! I love the ropes and how they criss-cross over one another to create a woven effect. It seems that he used a few different methods while creating this pot,  and I know from my own personal experience, that requires a lot of skill and patience. I also appreciate how the bottom is not absolutely straight since art doesn't always have to be perfect. This is a job well done.

Bernard Leach

Image
This large vase by Bernard Leach was made in 1965. I really like the design he added to it. Online it says it is an inlay design. This means it was made by adding material like wood or silver onto the surface of the clay. The image he made remind me of a simple swan, while at the same time it can look like a growing flower with two leafs.

Bernard Leach

Image
I really enjoy this pot because of the contrast of colors, the blue really pops out against the white.  I also enjoyed this piece because after looking through Leach's different pieces I noticed that he used a lot of earthy tones like brown and green so this piece was aberrant from most of his work.  The pot is very simple, but elegant and beautiful.  I do have to say I would not pay $400.00 for this piece.

Bernard Leach

Image
This plate is made by Bernard Leach. It is simply beautiful. It reminds me of an underwater landscape. The spirals remind me of snails, while the branches reminds me of seaweed. I also enjoyed the color palette. It is very simple containing neutral colors. The colors contrast each other to show two different extremes.

Bernard Leach

Image
This is a soup ball created by Bernard Leach and he produced a range of "standard ware" handmade pottery for the general public.  He had an a lasting influence in North American pottery. I like this piece because its very simple and i like the blend of colors. i really am amazed by the top and curvature and how the rim is a different color compared to the body.

Bernard Leach Black Jar

Image
This beautiful black jar was done by the famous Bernard Leach. Known as the "Father of British Studio Pottery", Bernard Leach influenced contemporary ceramic design. He mainly produced ceramics in the tradition of Asian pottery. What I like about this jar is its simple bird design. His design is very simple yet eye captivating.
Image
This is a bowl created by Bernard Leach. He was a British artist born in the last 19th century who became a very influential studio potter. His style was simple and utilitarian, preferring function over form.  Writing the work  A Potter's Book , Leach influenced North American potters to return to a more standard ware style of pottery instead of creating more abstract, aesthetic pieces. It is for these reasons that I really like the bowl pictured above. It is simple and functional, while still maintaining an elegant aura. Although the color of the glaze lends a more homey feel to it, the lines of the bowl elevate it above a standard work.

Bernard Leach

Image
Bernard Leach is a British potter of the 20th century. He spent 11 years in Japan. He was inspired by the Japanese and started to make his pottery with a Japanese twist. This vase/bottle caught my eye mostly of the colors and how deep they are. I love the swirls and how the texture is grainy looking.

Famous British Potter Bernard Leach with Shoji Hamada
Image
The piece shown above is one of Shoji Hamada's famous works. The one ceramic of his many works is a product of his distinctive style, as this single piece shares similar aspects of its look with the majority of his work. If I were to describe it myself, I would say that this piece is what I imagine many fine historic Japanese dining ware to look like. In my imagination, I can see it being utilized as a soup bowl in Japan. The compilation of Hamada's work put Mashiko, Japan on the map, as he only sourced local resources to produce his work. Hamada brought notoriety to the town and himself, as he was named a "Living National Treasure" by the Japanese Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science, and Technology in 1955. With each sculpture, Hamada also molded the world of art. His work is still auctioned today.
